Construction of a new reception and retail building at Hell’s Gate Geothermal Park and Mud Bath Spa, replacing the existing reception facilities and creating a modern visitor arrival experience integrated with the existing café and tourism facilities.
The architectural design uses a high-pitched gable roof with exposed timber portal frames and extensive glazing to create a contemporary gateway building reflecting the cultural identity and natural environment of Hell’s Gate. The completed building provides modern visitor reception, ticketing, a retail merchandise shop, administration space and a feature glazed entrance.
Key construction challenges included maintaining public access to the operating tourist attraction, protecting existing geothermal infrastructure, managing drainage around geothermal ground conditions, and coordinating specialist trades across structural steel, engineered timber, glazing and bespoke joinery. The project was delivered on time and to a high standard following the initial COVID-19 closure.
